The powder is a blend of polymers, pigments, and other ingredients which are mixed in a hopper. The hopper has a fluidizing plate at the bottom which flows air up through the powder, keeping it in a liquid like state for application. Aaron is using his own self-made fluidizing hopper. 

Now looking at powder coating gun, on the front of it is a corona ring, which is attached to ground and this captures any overcharged powder particles so that they don’t cause any disruptions on the wheel. Not every powder coating gun has a corona ring. On the front of the gun you can see the x-pattern tip for spraying powder.

Once removed, you can see the electrode which charges the powder, and then a white plastic sleeve around it which protects the powder gun from getting any cured powder inside of it. This electrode tip operates up to 80,000 volts. This high voltage ionizes the air surrounding it, meaning the surrounding air particles don’t have a matching number of protons and electrons; in other words it creates a cloud or field around it with a charge.

There are different guns available, some with the ability to provide negatively charged particles, and some provide positively charged particles. With Aaron’s powder gun, the powder is then forced through the ionized field using air pressure, and the powder picks up a charge as it passes though. The wheel, in this scenario, is grounded. As the charged powder particles move through the air, they head to the nearest ground, which in this case is the wheel, which the powder then sticks to.

  1. Recent technology there is auto start/stop function. Most of people says it's fuel saving while heavy traffic but will it damage the engine and Will it degrade the pickup performance?

  3. As you are in Portland, you should take a visit to Skips Wheel Werkes in Beaverton. He can show you wheel straightening, refinishing, and the best mounting/balancing in the region. Of course I am biased, I have known Skip for years, and our company now does custom glass beading for him. Your viewers would enjoy a tour of his small place with true old world craftsmanship restoring Porsche, Lambo, Ferrari, Alfa, and other vintage and exotics… Nice people, great work..

  6. Very cool and a proper investment for a car like that. I've painted allot of wheels but always wanted to get set of wheels powder coated. I hear it's more chip resistant and for someone like me, who prefers longevity, it may be the way to go.

  7. FYI: PLEASE do not ever do abrasive media blasting with actual sand. The small silica particles can get stuck in the tissue in your lungs and cause silicosis over long periods. Most often, 120 grit aluminum oxide is used instead.

  15. It's perfectly fine to bake your wheels at high temperatures. I bake mine in the oven known as "Arizona" every day

  16. It's worth nothing that after chemically stripping and sand blasting it's a good idea to treat the now bare portions of aluminum with a selective anodize (Alodine for example). Since the Al-oxide layer is gone you've greatly increased the chance of galvanic corrosion, and corrosion in general, at the wheel/rotor interface.

  17. If you do not powder coat the hub area on a steel rim it will begin to rust very quickly. So what's the answer for that?

  18. One thing to watch for when getting stuff powder coatrd is WHAT powder they use. Epoxy is the bottom of the ladder, polyester is at the top. You can also get a mix of the two. Epoxy wasn't UV stable when I was powder coating and would fade over time. Some cars with black plastic trim parts do the same (start to go grey) if the supplier hasn't used UV stable plastic.

  19. I would have loved to learn the benefits of powder coating. Is it more resistant to scratches? Does it make the wheel easier to clean with high dusting brakes for example? Is it cheaper than traditional paint? Can it be applied to the body of a car? Can it be done on a whole car?

  20. OEM wheels are made with way more process and controls, the raw aluminum wheel have to go through 16 stages of pretreatment in different solutions and powder coated once, bake for 30 min, spray paint and bake again, finally one more layer of clear powder and bake again.
    OEM wheels may not look as good as aftermarket wheels, but the quality standard is extremely high! There is no possibility that this shop spray and baked wheel will last through 30 hours of salt water and acid splash, which is a test for all OEM wheels!

  21. I had my bmw rims powder coated black and was so excited to put them on, I even got new tpms,valve stems and tires. This was pretty expensive. Eventually I had a nail in my tire and needed a patch so I took it to a reputable tire shop and noticed the fix left a chunk of paint missing from my rims but not only that a few months back I curbed a sidewalk and no rash just another circular chunk missing….

    Is that normal? That doesn't sound very durable to me…

    I didn't read their reviews till after I dropped my rims off….take a look at the reviews, wow

  23. Sorry kid but you just ruined the age hardening of the forged Wheels from 6061-T6 to T something else that is brittle. Wheels are age hardened at 350 degrees and that powdercoater just baked them at 400+… Go figure..

    You had to mention that the wheels are made by metal and metals are electronegative, so a gun which produces positive powder coat is essential in this case.

  27. Problem with wheels that lived in salty conditions. Here they put salt on the road. Applying powder to salt damaged wheels causes air bubbles in curing process. Wheels look pretty bad up close.

  28. great information! However, it should be noted that this is an expensive process and pending on a verity of factors, it may be cheaper to simply buy new wheels, In addition, it should also be noted that once damaged or scratched, power coated products are hard and expensive to repair.
