The Land Speed Record Cars – where are they now?


A brief overview of the cars that have held the outright World Land Speed Record (WLSR) since 1920, with details of where they are now.

Note that cars that have held class records (e.g. Goldenrod – wheel-driven record) and records set outside the FIA’s mandated rules (e.g. Mickey Thompson’s Challenger – one-way run) are not included here, but may be covered in future videos. Please subscribe to my channel for updates:

  1. What about Goldenrod  American streamliner land speed racing car which held the wheel-driven land speed record from 1965 to 1991. It was owned by Bob "Butch" and Bill Summers, of Ontario, California. Bob Summers drove the car to set the land speed record. The car is powered by four fuel injected Chrysler Hemi engines mounted inline and created a total output of 2,400 hp

  5. The Thrust 2 from 1983 has to be the design basis Anton Furst used to create the 89 Batmobile. I have never seen credit given, though.

  6. There is one of the world's fastest diesel trucks in my hometown. It was known as Phoenix. Ran by robert slagle (who sadly died in 98) then ran by carl heap who retired it shortly after

  9. This completely biased load of propaganda nearly completely ignores all the early attempts and drivers from Americans. I find that quite typical of Brit 'reporting' from that era and a bit later as well. Hey, they did do some remarkable stuff, but completely leaving out the Stutz Black Special and calling the contraption shown during that description elegant, they insult the memory of Frank Lockhart, who in 1928 gave his life right there on that same beach. It didn't survive, but then again, nor did several others, but because they were built by Brits, they were included. Later on, they entirely ignore Mickey Thompson's Challenger I. Really? Mickey Thompson? They continue, leaving out the most significant machines of the modern era, preferring to concentrate on Andy Green and other 'jets on the ground' while the real wheel driven cars were dropped from view, in favor of the sensational numbers, which went higher and with ever higher speeds achieved by strapping bigger and bigger jet engines to a set of coasting wheels. Big effin' deal. The challenges of wheel driven are too much for them. Wheel driven does go on, with numbers that would and should impress you. I'm far more impressed with those. Far more.

  11. It' nice to find a video that has facts & presented by someone who's sane & doesn't act like a squirell on meth…but this video jumps around & goes from a jet driven car back to a wheel driven car & misses out a whole lot of others.

The first car built specifically as a Land Speed Record car was the Darracq 200 in 1904 and you can still see it being RACED at the British VSCC meetings in the UK since 2010 in the hands of Mark Walker, google "Walker Darracq" for Youtube video and http://www.darracq.info. More than 100 years and still active. Incredible.

  14. You forgot the Aussie Invader 3. Potential top speed of over 1000 km/h and was on display at the Gosford car museum. (Which is shut down now)

  15. my old 1956 Chrysler with it's 392 full race hemi used to do over 160 but had to find a straight and long enough place on the interstate to get it that fast…lol i used to drive it on the streets like a normal car but it used to shake and made a lot of noise unlike a normal car, it out run the new roadrunner's and a couple of vets in the top end.

  16. bullshit… Mikey Thompson did 406.6 mph in his challanger 1 on the salt flats in 1960 and was the first american to break the world land speed record, it had 4 wheels and 4 Pontiac v-8 engines not jet engines. and you totally failed to even mention any of Mickey Thomson's contributions to world land speed records.

  17. l have a huge print of BLUEBIRD 4 ,301 MPH RECORD CAR hanging in my living room .l wish l had the original painting worth millions today by a famous Scottish artist JACK VETTRIANO ( BORN JACK HOGGAN ) WHICH l believe was from a photo from New York Times 1935 of the Bonneville attempt pre run First 🙂
    l got it from a pizza and pasta restaurant where it lived for over a decade until they remodeled and l finally got to buy it 4yrs ago 🙂

  18. In the early '60s, Mickey Thompson went 406.06 mph one way, but had to back off the return run so couldn't match that within the required percentage for a 2 way average. So, no record, but still not too bad for a home built car based on chalk marks on the garage floor. Don't forget Dr Nathan Ostich and his Flying Caduceus and Athol Graham and his City of Salt Lake, A bit later (1967), the Summers Brothers Goldenrod pushed the wheel driven speed a little higher to 409.277 (2 way average, so official record). As a youngster growing up in the "60s, reading about all of this, along with USAC and F1 and NASCAR was enough to keep me occupied to the extent that my parents often did not have to go looking for me. I was in my room reading Hot Rod, Car Craft, etc, etc. Thank you for this reminder of the history of the LSR.

  20. I was in the Gerlach high school library when Thrust SSC broke the sound barrier. It shook the decorative bezels from the fire sprinklers out of the ceiling, onto the floor. I feel like I got to see a very special moment in time.

  23. What about Mickey Thompson? Can't remember the year. Wheel driven car with 4 Pontiac V8 engines. Over 406 miles per hour at Bonneville salt flats. Think it was in the early nineteen sixties.

  24. Why no mention of Ab Jenkins and the Mormon Meteor? Or all the other records he broke at Salt flats? I think he broke more records than any one else. The guy was awesome!

  25. I checked out "Bluebird" up in Cumbria to travel 200mph+ with that car and technology you must have a hart of a Lion I would do 30mph in it!!

  26. Amazing not a single record breaker from Bonneville exists in any displays near Bonnevillle, the State of Utah or on the West Coast. Quite frankly I’m pissed

The fastest car had broke the sound barrier, but was 1 minute late for the retyrn run , then it broke the sound barrier twice the next day,, it was kinda ho-hum , there's that damn sonic boom again . That car is engineered the correct way for speed. Move it back to black rock dry lake , and I bet even today it would go faster than 700 miles per hour

  28. Imagine doing 140 mph in your Sedan when a car from 1997 goes past you at 763 mph – which is 12.7 miles per minute or a fifth of a mile every second!
