CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Neal (Steve Martin) and Del (John Candy) bargain with a motel clerk for a room.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Were it not for its profanity-laden opening scenes, John Hughes’ Planes, Trains and Automobiles might have been suitable family entertainment: certainly it’s heaps less violent and mean-spirited than Hughes’ Home Alone. En route to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with his family, easily annoyed businessman Neal Page (Steve Martin) finds his first-class plane ticket has been demoted to coach, and he must share his flight with obnoxious salesman Del Griffith (John Candy). A sudden snowstorm in Chicago forces the plane to land in Wichita. Unable to find a room in any of the four-star hotels, Neal is compelled to accept Del’s invitation to share his accommodations in a cheapo-sleazo motel. Driven to distraction by Del’s annoying personal habits, the ungrateful Neal lets forth with a stream of verbal abuse. That’s when Del delivers the anticipated (but always welcome) “I don’t judge, why should you?”-type speech so common to John Hughes flicks. The shamefaced Neal tries to make up to Del, but there’s a bumpy time ahead as the mismatched pair make their way back to Chicago, first in a balky train, then by way of a refrigerator truck. We know from the outset that the oil-and-water Neal and Del will be bosom companions by the end of Planes, Trains and Automobiles, but it’s still a fun ride. The best bit: a half-asleep Del thinking that he’s got his hand tucked between two pillows — until his bedmate, Neal, bellows “Those aren’t pillows!”

  1. you'd think that piaget watch alone would have been more than enough for the room, they're really expensive. it probably paid for the damage they caused when they crashed into the motel and the free booze.

  2. Del should have offered to hook up the motel with some sweet-ass discounts on new shower curtain rings.  He would have been given the Imperial suite which had NO LOCKS on the telephones.

  3. I wonder how much Steve Martin misses our beloved John Candy!! I have never heard him speak out about him. Has anyone else out there? The two were just so magnificent together!!

  4. Maybe I'm reading too much into this scene, but I believe now the part where Neil gives up his watch for a room is symbolic. It's like he's giving up the last part of the person that he was before he met Del.

You'll note in the next part of the scene when Del sits in the freezing busted car and Neil is in his warm bedroom Neil shouts out to him, "You'll freeze to death out there."

Bet you earlier in the film he would've just let Del sit out there and let the man freeze (or worse die).

  5. I don't care what anybody thinks! If you bring burnt credit cards to a public place, like a motel, you're obviously screwed! #JustSaying

  6. 2 dollars & a Casio. whoooooo.
Casio watches were always considered cheap & somewhat durable bk in my days. digital or simple quartz watch lol. Neil watch looked worth few.

  7. Classic John Candy moment! I always laughs when he laughed… In the end, it kinda sad they don't make these kind of movies anymore like they used to.

  8. Notice 1:11 where Del makes that reaction of.."oh man, don't be stupid"…I would have found a pawn shop to get rid of that thing way before the car burned up lol

  9. Hey! I work in a hotel, and I can unequivocally say, I would have given Candy the room for that Casio! lol!!
