Ford Ranger Raptor: can a diesel ute be fun? | MOTOR

[Applause] performance cars come in many different shapes and sizes there are hoarded up hatchbacks sleek sexy super cars and curvaceous coupe A's but I've never seen a performance car that looks like that according to Ford that's exactly what this massive high riding diesel-powered ute is it's an official Ford performance product and was primarily designed right here in Australia but it does beg the question can a diesel truck be fun first impressions are pretty positive the Ranger Raptor is remarkably car-like in the way it drives it's comfortable but I certainly wouldn't call it fast here's a 2 liter twin-turbo diesel engine and a 10 speed automatic but it's almost 2.3 tonnes it needs every one of those gears to keep its massive bulk moving it is slow in the corners it feels huge tall and heavy it's not exactly putting a smile on my dial but then it wouldn't because I'm looking for the answer in completely the wrong place at this point most performance cars wouldn't need to turn around but right here this is where the Raptor comes alive just as a 911 gt3rs is designed to decimate racetracks the range of Raptor was developed with one goal in mind the ability to drive over anything at any speed it's secret weapon is its suspension it has expensive shock absorbers built by us off road racing experts Fox which can soak up a simply insane amount of punishment you've seen obstacle and wince preparing for impact yet you barely feel it Ford has even built a car which can fly just as Ferrari has track mode the Raptor has bar mode named after a famous desert race this improves engine response and lets you slide around without letting me crash in full driver behaves like a giant rally car using its special off road tires to find amazing grip on slippery services maxximum laughs though living in rear-wheel drive let me have the grunt of the v8 it's Australia is famous for you can draw over in a very similar fashion to call the Ranger Raptor a performance car is to stretch the definition of the term to breaking point but can you have fun in a diesel truck or in the right environment absolutely [Applause]
